In 2012, members of the Penn Social Media and Health Innovation Lab team launched the MyHeartMap Challenge, a crowdsourcing, mobile media and social media challenge that engaged the public to geo-locate Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in Philadelphia.
Using the MyHeartMap App, more than 330 teams and individuals participated in the challenge. Over eight weeks more than 1,500 AEDs were identified and the most comprehensive AED map in Philadelphia was created. The contest was just the first step in what the team hopes will grow to become a nationwide, crowd-sourced AED registry project that will put the lifesaving devices in the hands of anyone, anywhere, anytime. We will continue to accept submissions of AED devices to build a nationwide database.
